Which Sewing Machine?

I'm after some advice on Sewing machines. I'm looking to spend under £300. but need a machine that is good and solid, will handle a range of thicknesses of fabrics, fully adjustable stitch width and length, a few decorative stitches, one step button hole, drop feed. and very reliable.

I would love to know which machines you use and how you rate them.
And if you can recommend a good machine.

Come on folks I need some help here.

Sorry, can't give any advice on sewing machines...although Brother seems to be a good brand (not sure if you get that one over there).

  2. Hi, this is a toughie as everyone will have their own opinions. I've had a Singer for years and it has been totally reliable, they seem to have some good models at the moment. You may be pushed to find a machine that handles a range of thicknesses (all depends how think you mean I guess) for your budget. For a quick round up try 'Sew' magazine they tend to feature a selection of different machines each month. Good luck

  5. I think I'm going to look at a Janome. There are a couple of models that I'm considering. I think I'd like to stick with a mechanical model. I'm old fashioned at heart and don't need loads of fancy stuff.

I did look at a Bernina as I used to use them when I was teaching Food and textiles. they were solid and reliable. Can't get what I want in my price range!
